Privacy policy

This describes what the site actually does today — it is not boilerplate copied from somewhere else.

We do not sell your data or share it with anyone. No tracking cookies, no advertising.

What we collect

If you do not create an account: we store no name, no email and nothing that identifies you.

We record anonymous visit statistics so we know which pages are read: the page, the language, the kind of device (phone, tablet or computer), the browser family and the time, with a random visit id kept in your browser for the session. We do not store your IP address — we store a salted hash of it that cannot be turned back into the address — and we do not store your full browser string (user agent). If your browser sends Do Not Track, your page visits are not recorded (only sign-in and sign-out events are kept for account holders, for the account's security).

If you do create one: your email, your name, your password stored as an unreadable hash, your learning progress, the items you save, and your visit statistics are linked to your account.

Cookies

We use one essential session cookie, cryptographically signed, which expires after 14 days.

There are no advertising cookies, no tracking cookies and no third-party cookies.

What is stored on your device

Your preferences (language, light or dark, reading settings) and your learning progress are stored in your own browser — not with us.

If you create an account later, that progress is merged into it rather than discarded.

No tracking

There is no Google Analytics, no Facebook pixel, and no third-party tracking tool on this site.

We do not sell or share any data with anyone.

External services

Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts and from our own hosting. Photographs from Wikimedia Commons are stored on our own hosting, so no other site learns you opened the page.

If you use Ask Sawah, your question and the conversation so far in that window are sent to the model provider (currently Groq) to answer it, with nothing that identifies you. The window says so under the question box every time.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, or ask us to delete your account and everything attached to it, at any time.

Write to us from the contact page.

Changes to this policy

Any material change will be recorded here with its date.

This version: 24 September 2026 — adds the description of visit statistics and how long they are kept, and of what is sent to the Ask Sawah provider. Previous version: 18 August 2026.

How long we keep data

Your account data: as long as your account exists.

Visit statistics: thirteen months, then deleted automatically. We do not sell or share them, and we do not use them for advertising.

Whatever is stored in your own browser stays until you clear it from the browser's settings, or clear it from within the site.

Deleting your account

Ask at the contact address and it is done. The email, the name, the hashed password, the learning progress and the saved items all go.

We keep no copy “for statistics”. A deleted account is deleted.

The request is manual for now because the self-service delete has not been built; that is a description of the present, not a promise about the future.

How passwords are stored

The password itself is never stored. What is stored is a hash of it, produced by an algorithm designed to be deliberately slow, from which the password cannot be recovered.

In practice that means we cannot tell you your password if you forget it — we can only let you set a new one. Any site that emails you your old password in plain text is storing it in plain text.
